Event Director: Laura Watson
laurabiopicAs a student attending the College of Textiles, majoring in Fashion Development and Product Management, I decided that I wanted to bring awareness to diabetes through fashion after having been diagnosed with the disease approximately four years ago. I was diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic on July 15, 2004 - one month prior to the start of my freshman year here at N.C. State University. I was severely sick and even though my college days were right around the corner, I struggled at getting my blood glucose in control. It was devastating to all of a sudden harbor a disease that did not run in my family and that I thought was only contrived through hereditary ties. I played sports in high school and ate decent and yet I could not understand how something so unexpected could happen to me. After struggling physically and emotionally with diabetes, I finally began to cope. It helped to speak out about this disease and reach those that struggle with the same health issues and complications.
Over the past year, I began to plan "Couture for a Cure" in order to help fund diabetes research to hopefully one day find a cure. I thought this would be a fantastic way to get others involved in something that deserves the attention. Through my unwavering passion for fashion design, I hope this is a movement that will impact others with or without diabetes to make a difference. I believe we will soon find a cure for diabetes and it is my mission to contribute to that discovery in any way that I can.
Laura Watson is 21 years of age and was born in Hampstead, NC. She is currently a senior attending the College of Textiles at N.C. State University majoring in Textiles and Apparel Management with a concentration in Fashion Development. She is currently working towards acquiring an internship in New York for the upcoming summer 2008. As far as her future is concerned, Laura hopes to work in fashion design or something along those lines when she graduates in May 2009. She would also like to start her own clothing line once she has had some hands on experience working in the fashion industry. Although most importantly she wants to continue her efforts in bringing awareness to diabetes as well as directing "Couture for a Cure" for another year in hopes of it becoming an annual event in association with the College of Textiles.
